Cantautora canadiense. Estudió arte en Calgary, donde comenzó a cantar en clubes. Con el tiempo se estableció en Laurel Canyon, Cal., EE.UU. Diversos artistas convirtieron en éxitos varias de sus primeras canciones, entre ellas "Both Sides Now y "Woodstock. Aunque sus primeras grabaciones, como Clouds (1969) y Blue (1971), se orientaron a la música folclórica y reflejaban el idealismo de la época, en discos posteriores, como Court and Spark (1974), Hejira (1976), Mingus (1979, con Charles Mingus) y Turbulent Indigo (1994), se aprecia la fuerte influencia del pop y del jazz. La notable originalidad de sus textos y de sus adaptaciones musicales hicieron de ella una de las cantautoras preeminentes de fines del s. XX.
